GD History

Graphic Design is one of the most eminent subjects among modern art education and apprentices globally. It has a very fluid transaction in various spheres of our societal, economical, cultural, political and practical aspects. Because, whatever we do and whatever message we want to convey to people around us, for successful communication, information has to be presented in a very gripping way. For aesthetic and acceptable representation of any information, knowledge of Graphic Design is inevitable. So, Graphic design has manifold importance in modern world; to make a piece of information representable is one of them, enhancing its aesthetic representation is the other one.

Faculty of Fine Arts, the first and foremost institute to teach fine arts in Bangladesh, started functioning under the strong leadership of Zainul Abedin, back in 1948 under the name of Government Institute of Arts. Graphic Design was known as Department of Commercial Art in that period. Potua Kamrul Hasan was in charge of this department at its very beginning.

After Mr. Quamrl Hassan, Khwaza Shafique Ahmed was in charge of Graphic Design. Mr. Ahmed is still remembered for his strict and successful academic and administrative endeavors.

After him, the department continued enhancing its legacy with nationally- internationally acclaimed artists like Qayyum Chowdhury and Samarjit Roy Choudhury. The department also had artist Mustafa Monwar (adjunct), Syed Ali Azam and Md. Zamir Uddin as teachers and course instructors.

In 1956 the institute was reformed as a college and after the Independance, it was named as Bangladesh college of Arts & Crafts and The department was named as - Byaboharik Shilpakala (Practical Arts) instead of Commercial Art for a while. Since 1983, when the college was taken under University of Dhaka - the department was named as 'Department of Graphic Design' - contextualizing it with the global academic world. Still it is known in this name.

According to the number of students enrolled, Department of Graphic Design is the second largest department of Faculty of Fine Arts. However according to the stipulation of current world and students choice, this department can proudly claim it as the most sorted out one, among all other departments under Faculty of Fine Art.

According to the demands of modern world, Department of Graphic Design is always concerned with preparing highly Educated and professional graduates. IT literacy is very important in today's world. This department has a full- functioning computer lab of itself. To make its students eligible to present their projects in front of international clients, a special course in English language skills is also run by this department for enhancing students English spoken capability.

Considering the national and international context of today's world, Department of Graphic Design is definitely one of the most important subjects of Institute of Fine Arts.
