Abstract

Hand fans have been an essential and daily-use item for the common people in Bangladesh since ancient times. Villagers have been crafting hand fans for centuries, and their design and craftsmanship have sometimes elevated them to the status of art objects. As a result, these Nakshi hand fans are considered a form of folk art, characterized by geometric designs and arrangements reminiscent of abstract art. Hand fan designs are often incorporated into various poster designs, particularly banner festoons made for Pahela Boishakh celebrations. There are notable regional differences in the design, materials, and craftsmanship of hand fans. This article explores the diversity, motifs, and designs of Nakshi fans and offers suggestions for improving their marketing, production, and the aesthetics of fan artisans.
